The Local Development Agency: “Achaia – Development Agency S.A.” was created in 1998 by organizations of Local Administration of Achaia region, intending to develop the agricultural sector of the region, especially by means of management & implementation of European Programmes (e.g: Community Initiative LEADER II, INTERREG IIIB Cohesion, LEADER+, LEADER 2007-13, INTERREG “Greece-Italy 2007-13” etc).
Among other local networks Achaia – Development Agency S.A. is an active member of the GREEK LEADER NETWORK.
Area covered by the Agency: The whole Region of Achaia (The region consists of 5 Municipalities => Aigialeia, Erymanthos, Kalavrita, Patras, West Achaia).
Brief description of the Region The harmonious combination of mountains and the sea makes the area an ideal place to visit all around the year, oering the visitors breathtaking alterations of scenery. The unique coastline extends to 125 kms.
Beautiful mountains and natural monuments, such as the Vouraikos Canyon with its Cog Railway and the Cave of the Lakes, picturesque settlements and modern tourism infrastructure, including the Ski Center, Paragliding, Mountaineering and Canoe-kayak facilities oer a wealth of choices to agrotourism lovers, while lacy seaside routes complete the area’s prole. Alongside of the region of Achaia there are many places worth visiting such as: Religious and Historic Landmarks (e.g. “The Place of Sacrice” in Kalavrita), Monasteries, Museums, Protected Landscapes of NATURA 2000 (Chelmos mountain and Vouraikos River), archeological sites, traditional guesthouses, local wineries e.t.c. Apart from the splendid landscapes the region of Achaia is also gastronomically rich. There are traditional shops with local handmade products (dierent types of pasta, sweets, local cheeses, “Tentoura” liqueur e.t.c.) and traditional delicacies such as: “feta”cheese from Kalavrita, “trachanas” soup, smoked trout, “rodozachari” (rose-petal preserve), pasta squares e.t.c. A particular gastronomic destination for visitors, with places such as: the village of Planitero (known from its trout and salmon breeding farms), most areas along the coastline (Egira, Akrata, Diakopto, Aigialeia, etc) while wine enthusiasts can taste blends from exquisite local varieties (“Roditis”, “Mavrodafne” and “Mavro Kalavritino”) from the area’s wineries.
